The 7th Annual Benefit Ride/Cruise

The 7th annual benefit ride/cruise is scheduled for Sunday June 24th. For you motorcycle and classic car enthusiasts this is a great opportunity to enjoy some beautiful southeastern Ohio scenery from Dalton, Ohio to a destination 5 miles east of Salineville Ohio in lovely Jefferson County. Registration is from 11 AM to 1PM at Das Kitchen on route 30 just west of Dalton. All procedes go to Team Up For Honduras, a ministry which supports orphaned girls when the graduate from high school in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras.

2017 Fall Trip To Honduras

Wednesday, October 18, 2017 John and Laurel Travelled to Santa Rosa de Copan to spend 6 weeks and be at the graduation of the five young ladies from the Hogar de Ninas. When the arrived at the Airport in San Pedro Sula they were wonderfully surprised that the five soon to be graduates made the trip with Joe and Christian to pick them up. They all had lunch together at Pizza Hut in San Pedro and then after stocking up with groceries and supplies made the 3 and 1/2 hour trip up the mountain to Santa Rosa. We are looking forward to having Digna, Lurbin, Ermelinda, Melisa, and Estefani in our program next year.

Spiritual Retreat, Sunday, October 22, 2017

Sunday, October 22, 2017 we held an all day Spiritual retreat for the young women in our program. Estefani, Melisa, Lurbin, Ermelinda, and Digna who will be graduating next month and coming into our project were able to join us. Topics included: "Overcoming Mediocrity", "The Dangers of Social Media", and "Living Life with God" along with two presentations on values. Laurel and John presented the first values presentation, talking about the meaning and importance of values in relationships and focusing on the values of Modesty, Generosity and Kindness, and Humility. As always we especially enjoyed the singing of the girls.

Second annual Dinner and Dance Fundraiser

The response was so positive from our Dinner and Dance last year that we dicided to do it again. Despite near blizzard conditions, forty six people braved the weather for an evening of great food and fun. This year we will again ask everyone to reserve their tickets so we can plan accordingly. The food will be great and will again include Phebe Wesman's gourmet desserts. The "Denim & Diamonds" theme encourages you to come as casual to as formal as you wish. We will be doing several demo dances including The West Coast Swing and an Irish Set Dance, and there will be several line dances. Dance participation is optional. We hope you will join us for an evening of food and fun for a terrific cause.

As I write the temperatures are headed toward 90 degrees for the third day in a row with no relief in site. Joe says this has been the hottest he has seen in the 14 years he has been here. Things have been much quieter since the Ramers and Tyrrells left on the 11th. Friday we invited Elsa with her son David and Arely and daughter Brihana for lunch. They were both at the Hogar several years ago. Friday night the young women we sponsor came for movie night and snacks. On Sunday Laurel and I helped cook lunch for the girls at the Hogar. We grilled chicken and hot dogs. The girls were so appreciative. Sunday night it was Yeny's turn to cook for the weekly Sunday dinner for those we support in our program. Glendy from downstairs helped Yeny and the meal was held at our apartment. There were 12 total for chicken, potatoes, gravy, salad, corn, and ice cream for dessert. We then watched an episode of Little House on the Priarie. Laurel also helped Joe and the girls work in his garden one day at the Hogar.The week was truly one of continuing to solidly relationships. The perserverance and resolve of these young ladies continues to amaze me in this poor environment with little opportunity for advancement. Laurel and I are thankful to be involved in their lives through our work with Keith, Flo, and Joe as Team Up For Honduras. To see more picks from last week go to photos and clicck on the last pic.

April 2015 Team Up To Honduras Trip

We arrived in Santa Rosa De Copan Thursday afternoon April 2, 2015 tired from travel but excited to see our friends in Honduras. We spent several hours on Good Friday at The Fourteen Stations of The Cross Processional up the Main Street of Santa Rosa De Copan. They start preparations for this at 4:00 am Good Friday morning when different groups of people get up and use colored sawdust to depict the different Stations on the street. During the Processional they stop at each Station and the Bishop reads from Scripture about that Station. As I sit here on Easter Sunday reflecting on this weekend I am once again reminded of the pain and suffering Christ went through on the day of His death on the Cross. I am so grateful for the hope that we have in Christ's death and resurrection the eternal life we have in Him.

We have spent many hours over the last several days laughing, talking, and playing games and renewing friendships with the young women we work with here in Honduras.

Team Up For Honduras Valentines Day Dinner Dance Fundraiser event

On Saturday February 14, 2015 Team Up For Honduras held their first annual Valentines Day Dinner Dance fundraising event. Although at times throughout the day we questioned whether to cancel due to severe winter weather, we decided to go ahead as planned. Of the 62 that bought tickets 44 braved the weather and attended. We were served a delicious meal prepared by Phebe Wesman. Following the meal we viewed a short video presentation of Team Up's last service trip to Honduras. John Leedy gave a brief summary about the ministry and goals of Team Up For Honduras. Then it was time to dance. Stevie Bliss of Blisss Dance LLC was unable to come from Columbus to do the instructing due to the whiteout conditions outside. Florence Ramer stepped in to teach several line dances. There was much laughter and fun on the dance floor for the rest of the evening. We are thankful for the volunteers that helped make the night a success. We were grateful to the people that came out to show their support for the ministry of Team Up For Honduras. We received many positive affirmations on the evening and encouragement to do this again. So mark it on your calendar and plan to attend next Valentines Dinner Dance. For those of you that ride motorcycle or just like a drive in the country, come out to our fourth annual Motorcycle/Drive on June 14. Save the date now and watch for more details of that event. 2014 in Review and a Look at 2015

2014 in Review

2014 was a growing and rewarding year forTeam Up. We began a new dimension of our work by taking on two year support of young ladies who finish high school and leave their work and lodging at the elderly home. With two new graduates from the Hogar in December 2013 we supported 8 young ladies, 6 of them being from the Hogar. We continue to pay for Roger's physical therapy and are blessed each time we visit him and his wife Nancy and daughter Donna. John and Laurel have experienced a strong bond with the young ladies as they lengthen their stays. Keith and Flo have been blessed with 2 new grandchildren and are looking forward to a trip to Santa Rosa in the spring of 2015 to reconnect with the girls. They were blessed with the opportunity to support Yeny while she was in Wisconsin until last June and attended her graduation in May. We also feel extremely blessed to have Blanca as our new house mom. Because of generous donations we were also able to provides funds for the hardware for a young woman to have hip replacement surgery and we continued to provide funds for smaller maintenence projects at the Hogar.

2015-Moving Forward

Our focus will continue to be to provide support and encouragement to the young women who leave the Hogar as they finish high school. Beginning in January we have 11 young ladies we support including the 2 young women from the elderly home. John and Laurel will continue to lengthen their stay as they build relationships with the young women and the girls at the Hogar. Along with housing and education , beginning in January we have implemented a monthly savings program. We will match up to 200 Lempira per month with each young lady who is willing to put a small amount into savings to be used to launch them when they finish their time with us. This could potentially amount to $2000 in four years which is the equivalent of about six months wages. We also will continue to pay for education beyond the four years. Team Up is also planning to build on to a small block house for Thelma and her two sons. Thelma left the Hogar around 12 years ago. The addition will increase her living quarters from 180 square feet to 380 square feet. As funds come in we are excited to continue to find ways to serve the less fortunate and very deserving people of Santa Rosa. As always Joe continues to be the stabilizing role model for the girls as well as our eyes and ears and we are so greatful for his leadership as we look forward to 2015.

Building relationships

Busy time in Santa Rosa de Copan this week. John has been under the weather with a chest cold so I have been at the hogar de ninas most afternoons doing crafts and most of all building strong relationships. Love spending time with the girls and listening to the laughter and chatter, balls bouncing, jump ropes, jacks and some disagreements. There are currently 47 girls at the hogar (home) between the ages of 4 to 19, along with marias (girls from villages outside of the town that attend High School in the evening and work at the home during the day). The girls are currently on summer break till February so we have time to spend with them. Wednesday I helped with Christmas cards they are making. I am always amazed at how talented they are with none of the modern day things, just paper, scissors & glue. Thursday I took up my paper to teach them how to make German stars out of strips of paper. What a challange with the little girls but soon the tutors, marias and nuns were all busy folding paper stars. Most evenings are spent playing Dominos at our apartment with a couple of the neighbors till late but lots of laughter about who is the official "Champeón", each night we just start where we stopped the night before. Today a couple of the girls in our program didn't work so we made cupcakes to take and have the girls decorate, lots of frosting everywhere but all worth it. On our walk back to the apartment we stopped at the elderly home to visit Paula, a woman that Team Up For Honduras helped pay for her hip replacement on October 14. Her family lives in a village out in the mountains and she could no longer walk and doctors said she would become bedridden if she did not have the surgery. This was the first we met her and her husband and was surprised how young she is. She is recuperating at the elderly home across from the hospital till she can return to her village. Pray for her recovery and also her family. God has shown us so much of His grace and love, it is very humbling to see these situations and still see his hand in all of it. Very thankful to serve and let Him lead where we are to go. Feel Blessed

The week of November 10th in review.

The week of November 2nd was one of relationship building for the Leedy's in Santa Rosa. Each day we visited the Hogar de Ninas to visit the younger girls and teens in the orphanage. The older girls finished finals during the week and are done school until February and four young ladies going into our program will graduate November 22. The younger girls finish November 14th. Most evenings were spent entertaining visitors. Two separate evenings we invited young women who are no longer in the program for dinner with three of them bringing their young children, and of course we had forgotten the concept of child proofing. Most evenings after dinner was spent with young ladies from our program and Marta and Osiris from our apartment complex playing dominos and talking. Yeny, who was in Wisconsin for two years and is now back in our program has been a God-send in overcoming the communication barriers. The highlight of the week was Letty and Erik's wedding. Letty was helped by Joe for four years before we started Team Up and has been out of the orphanage for seven years. It was the first wedding held in the Hogar de Ninas chapel of someone formerly from the Hogar. It was beautiful and full of tradition. Osiris and Marta along with Kelsey who is Osiris' niece were in the wedding. There were about 250 people at the reception including many former young ladies from the Hogar. The reception lasted until 5:00 A.M. although Laurel and I only lasted until 1:30 A.M. Last night we hosted the weekly Sunday dinner for those in our program. It was Yeny's turn to cook and she and Laurel made Mexican tacos. We had cupcakes and ice cream to celebrate four birthdays in November as we concluded a great week of nurturing relationships. Even the weather got better with the last five days sunny and in the mid 70's.

John and Laurel travel to Santa Rosa

John and Laurel Leedy left Ohio October 29th to spend a month in Santa Rosa. Arriving in San Pedro Sula they were greeted by Joe and the driver Christian along with four grade schoolers from the orphanage and Osiris from our program. It was such a surprise since Joe has never brought any children with him. Of course 10 year old Gracia was car sick the entire way to and from Santa Rosa de Copan. After lunch we spent 4 hours in San Pedro Sula shopping for furnishings for the new girls including a refrigerator, microwave, dishes, pots and pans etc. Then we headed for Santa Rosa making the 90 mile journey in four hours after dark. On Saturday Laurel spent some time helping the girls at the Hogar make bread for the week. Today (Sunday) was a great day despite 3 days of constant rain and temperatures only reaching the low 60's. After going to church this morning with the children from the orphanage, John and Joe cooked hamburgers on the grill for them while Laurel along with Osiris and Yeny and the children played games. This evening we took several of our young ladies from our program to dinner at Lenca Maya. We look forward to continuing to strengthen the relationships with the girls in our programs this month, as well as continuing to build the relaionships we have with the girls at the orphanage and several folks in our apartment complex.

A Visit by Yeny

On Jan 1, 2014 Yeny arrived from Wausau, Wisconsin, to visit for 12 days. She has been studying at North Central Technical College in Wausau for the past 1 1/2 years on a SEED Scholarship. She is studying business courses and will return to Honduras this summer.

Yeny stayed with us, Keith & Flo Ramer while she was visiting Ohio. On Sunday Jan. 5th we had an open house where many of the people who had met her in Honduras stopped in to visit. She was able to enjoy a horse drawn sleigh ride as well as attend a Dalton High School basketball game. She especially found the tour of Venture Products in Orrville, Ohio very interesting. Venture Products manufacture the Ventrac compact tractors. Seeing the whole manufacturing process helped her understand more from her business classes. We also visited Lehmans Hardware in Kidron and enjoyed a tour of Harry London chocolates in Canton, Ohio. It was great to have her visit Living Water Community church where the Leedys attend and Dayspring Christian Fellowship, the Ramers home church. She enjoyed time with John & Laurel Leedy visiting with family and attending their granddaughter's basketball game. Yeny also prepared a Honduran meal one evening for the Ramer family including our children and grandchildren. We also spent several evenings at home talking and watching videos.

2013 in Review

This past year has been a very rewarding year and as we reflect we feel extremely blessed. Our mission project is located in the city of Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras. Since Joe Self, Keith and Flo Ramer, and John and Laurel Leedy created Team Up For Honduras as a non-profit organization in 2011, we have seen the project grow from its original goal of helping the older girls from the Hogar de Ninas (an orphanage for girls) as they transition to life outside the orphanage. The ministry to these girls still remains our primary focus, but with the generous giving and success in fundraising in 2013 we have been able to expand into the community and accomplish other projects as Joe, who is our eyes, ears, and heart for the needs of the people in and around Santa Rosa, presents them to us.

Presently we have seven girls who have graduated from high school and are being supported by Team Up. Most have jobs and three of them are also taking college classes. Our two newest graduates, Yamely and Osiris are planning to take the college admission exam soon and hope to get enrolled into college this year. Osiris, Yamely, Lillian, Berta, and Digna live with our house mom Maria in an apartment that we furnish. Francisca who is in her fourth year with us lives in a small one bedroom apartment, and Yeny is in Wisconsin on scholarship. She will be returning to Santa Rosa in June.
